Getting to Know Us

Mount Waverley Sports emerged through the unification of two renowned traditional clubs: Mount Waverley Burwood Football Club (MWFC) and the Waverley Football Club (WFC) in 1998 to represent the Waverley district of the City of Monash.

Mount Waverley Sports is no doubt built on the solid foundation of hard work and Perseverance.  The Club won premierships in 2000 (Division 4 Eastern Football League), 2005 (Division 4 Eastern Football League) and 2008 (Division 3 Eastern Football League). The Club Reserves also make the cut by bagging premierships in Division 2 Eastern Football League in 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2015 respectively. There were equally impressive records from the junior team and Netball team who bagged not less than 11 premierships.

Historically, the Mount Waverley Burwood Football Club (MWFC) itself was a merger of the MWFC in 1925 and the Burwood Football Club which was a second division southern league club at the time. The MWFC was formed in 1925 and first played in red jumpers with a white sash before adopting its familiar navy blue jumpers with the white monogram. A dream does not become a reality by magic, but hard work is most suitable to describe the growth of Mount Waverley Football Club.

From its innovative improvisations of creating a playing ground and a goalpost for its first social match to finally joining a country league, the MWFC was no doubt a hard worker. Apart from its brief disbanding in 1929-1935, the Club has enjoyed a successful history at the Mount Reserve in Charles Street Mt. Waverley.

The merger of the MWFC and the Burwood Football Club happened in 1994 and became MOUNT WAVERLEY BURWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB (MWFC). The MWFC participated in First Division in the Southern League from 1994-1997.

In 1998, the committees of both MWFC and Waverley football club discussed the possibility of joining forces to form a new dynamic club. The WFC was also steeped in tradition formed in 1908 and wore the familiar black and red stripes in the Victorian Football Association. The WFC had success in “1965” winning the Division One Premiership in that year. The Waverley Football Club joined forces with the Eastern Football League in 1991 and had moderate success from 1991 until 1998.

What became Mount Waverley Sports has no doubt been a product of concerted efforts and resources pooled together by different but goal-oriented teams.

The Club currently participates in Division 3 in the Eastern Football League and play majorly at Mt. Waverley Reserve. It launched its first-ever Youth Girls football team in the under 16s and its first senior ladies’ netball team in the Netball EFL competition which won the premiership in Division 3 in its first year. Shortly after, the Club fielded its first-ever senior women’s football team, who made the grand finale that year. In 2018, the Club fielded two youth girls teams for the first time, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, there was no football played in Metro Melbourne. The Club looks forward to amazing days in 2021.
